Written in 1985 as a satire on British education proves that, except fashion, nothing changes.

 

Designed to constrict and promote claustrophobia, the panels of the set loomed inward, stiffing not just students, but teachers as well.

 

The butchers paper that covered the panels created an air of shoddiness, desperation and lack of care, while also allowing moments of dramatic tension to be created, making doors and entries where none was before.

The paper also showed the flimsy defences against the outside world, from school, once a cage but  now a place of safety, can no longer defend, reperesented by the vast 'chalk' mural.
