Les Miserables (school version) 2013

Alain Boublil et al.

Directed by Drew Stocker

For the famous musical adapted from Victor Hugo's 1862 novel about "The Miserable Ones" in 1820's/1830's France (Shortened for school audiences), we kept the costumes very traditional. Given the size of the cast (up to 100) many of the students provided elements of their costumes which I broke-down and distressed to create a cohesive whole.

To aid visual recognition through of character groups within the production we used blocks of colour: Green for Workers, red and black for the Thenardier's gang.

The Students wore predominantly black with red cravats, referencing their song "Red and Black" as well as a self portrait of Léon Cogniet a teacher and painter . To illustrate their diferent backgrounds and personalities (covered in greater detail in the book) each Student wore different types of hat.

Cosette, most importantly, was designed to look like a piece of delicate porcelain or Delft Ware.

To ensure the "family" of Cosette was always identifiable where ever they were on stage, they were the only characters who wore blue.

A solo violinist was added to our production, dressed in the French tricolore and phrygian hat, representing the Spirt of Revolutionary France.
