Romeo & Juliet 2020
Directed by Jodi Busby
Shakespeare's archetypal Tragedy may have the further accolade of being the first show staged after Covid, and the opening of Western Australia's lock down. Already fully designed by March 2020, it was able to open on June 23rd,
only a month past the original opening date of 13th of May.

Performed by Year Ten students - roughly the age of Juliet (who will be fourteen the week she dies) - the design was intended to be very modern and graphic, to underline the themes of youth violence and disconnection.

We used professional Street Artists Socketset, Tony Daglish and Tattoovey who created a vibrant street scape on the cyclorama. To further the image of layers of accretion that are found in urban landscapes, I created several posters fusing Pop-Culture and Shakespearian references. On top of (and under) these were tags and stencils of Montagues and Capulets, showing the way an urban war can be waged using graffiti. The major locations of the play were created using periaktoi which were rotated backwards and forwards as necessary.
