Stalking Matilda, Tee O'Neill 2019

Concept sketch, before being changed to traverse

Directed by Kalika Duck
Matilda, a citizen of the First World, walks into the sea and is never seen again. Clearly inspired by Martin Crimp's post-theatrical Attempts on Her Life, as well Classical Greek Tragedy and Film Noir, Stalking Matilda is a agitation-propaganda piece written to try and see both sides of the Refugee/Asylum Seeker 'Crisis'.

Being told in a non-linear fashion and purposely 'stateless', meant that designing the set was somewhat challenging. Inspired by the Grenfell Tower Disaster, Jules Verne's Nautilus from 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas and the movie The Terminal, the set was designed to resemble the inner-workings of an aircraft terminal, lost-luggage office or customs station, covered in industrial, sterile, worn, stainless steel, and suitcases of the people lost in transition. We decided to use a traverse stage as a way of bringing the audience into the piece and seeing the emotions of the 'others'. Because of this, levels became extremely important and we built two tower 'blocks' which represented the 'Citizen' and the 'Alien'.

Suitcases became a very important motif and were incorporated into the lighting as well as the movement pieces.
